“Saudade, Finn Sailing Academy!”
I was besides Sander Jorissen that other guy who won the trip to the Finn Sailing Academy in Vilamoura at the ONK last September in Medemblik. What an incredible prize from Finn Club Holland was sponsored by Seaport Sailing Yachts, MSO Group, Mero Management B.V. and Finn Sailing Academy itself.
Upon arrival, the weather felt like the Boerenkool Cup—rainy and windy with 12 degrees—but that didn’t dampen the excitement. Luckily, as the week progressed, the conditions improved significantly. We had a fantastic group of six Dutch sailors, with Ronald and Peter Peet occasionally joining as sidekicks. Every morning, we warmed up by cycling to the harbor, went sailing in the afternoon and rode back on our supplied bikes for the debrief. Filipe Silva was our mentor on the water, and his debriefing sessions in the meeting room were just as valuable.
The sleeping accommodations were excellent, offering plenty of space. Transport to various restaurants was arranged with the Academy’s legendary superbus. And when it comes to Portuguese cuisine, no one knows it better than Filipe, dining was an experience in itself.
Sailing on the Atlantic Ocean was nothing short of amazing. With Filipe filming from the RIB, the daily footage made the learning experience even more insightful. Every day felt like progress. The mix of rabbit starts, short races, and nice long upwind legs—only to surf back on the downwind waves—made for the perfect training sessions.
The boats were all top-notch, and the best part? You could choose a different one every day. Both Classica’s and Fantastica’ss were available, each with a variety of masts to try out. A week filled with sunshine, rain, wind, waves, and even some flat waters. The conditions varied, and apart from one stormy day with too much wind and waves, we sailed every day.
For sailors of all levels, this was an incredibly instructive experience—one that’s definitely worth repeating.
Saudade, Finn Sailing Academy
Thank you all!
